NEWPORT, R.I. – Tennis legend Bud Collins is returning to Newport this month in a rare off-season appearance to give a lecture about Hall of Famer and Titanic survivor Dick Williams.
Entitled “The Miracle Man of Tennis…Dick Williams, Titanic Survivor,” Collins’ presentation slated for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, traces the life of Williams, who after jumping from the deck of the sinking ship and clinging to a half-submerged life raft for six hours, went on to attain the Number 1 ranking in the United States and place in the top 10 worldwide seven times between 1914 and 1925. He utlimately would be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1957.

NEWPORT, R.I. – Twenty at a time, a curious crowd streamed through a pair of oversized doors and into the Stanford White Casino Theatre. Old wooden chairs with well worn cushions sat with an untouched layer of dust. Crackled and chipped paint marked the walls, and a hodgepodge of old furniture, doors, and even a tub cluttered the aisles.
