NEWPORT, R.I. – We’ve been following the inspiring rise of the Salve Regina University sailing team from relative obscurity to national prominence for some time. On Sunday, the Seahawks will travel to Madison, Wisc. to compete against the best sailing teams in the country in the Intercollegiate National Sailing Championships.
Just five years ago, Salve sailors could be found competing in an outdated fleet of FJ’s, and despite residing in the “Sailing Capital of the World,” the university wasn’t allowed to host inter-collegiate regattas. Five years ago, the university had never achieved a top 20 New England ranking, let alone a top 20 in the nation.
But under the leadership of head coach John Ingalls, and thanks to some help from the community at large, all of that has changed.

NEWPORT, R.I. – Salve Regina University graduated its largest ever class over the weekend, with 680 diplomas handed out under a brilliant cloudless sky on the lawn behind the O’Hare Academic Center.
Malaak Compton-Rock, philanthropist, author and wife of comedian Chris Rock, delivered the commencement address.
In it, she called on the graduates to carry on their lives in service to others. “What will your call to action be?” she asked the hundreds of students, parents, faculty and friends in attendance.
680 degrees were awarded during Sunday's ceremony; the largest graduating class ever for the school.
It was the 60th commencement ceremony for the university, and the first for Salve President Sr. Jane Gerety, who likewise implored students to take with them the values of service the university seeks to impart.
In honor of her service, Compton-Rock was awarded one of two honorary doctorates handed out by the university. Noted artist Richard Grovesnor was awarded the other.
