A new year, a new owner at Beechwood? (Staff Photo)
Update: Astors Beechwood has sold. A deed recorded today with the city confirms that the property has sold for $10.5 million. The buyer is identified as Eastern Estates LLC, listing a California address.
NEWPORT, R.I. – The new year is heralding in some changes, and possibly a new owner for the Astors’ Beechwood.
In the photo above, a dumpster can be seen sitting in front of the historic manse, while the vintage car used by the character actors who have filled the home as their own, is loaded onto a flatbed. A sign outside indicated that the historic house and popular tourist and wedding destination was closed today, however staff were answering the phones.
Earlier today, more than one car pulled into the driveway only to stop and stare at the green dumpster, while others came to a crawl and craned their necks at the activity.
No comment was offered when asked of the activity at the Bellevue Avenue estate, but it may have something to with a recently settled lawsuit that could pave the way for the sale of the property.

Nicolas Cage bought Grey Craig in 2007. It's currently on the market for $12 million.
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Nicolas Cage, the Hollywood megastar who purchased the historic Grey Craig property in Middletown not quite two years ago, only to put it back on the market earlier this year, has reportedly run into a bit of tax trouble, prompting the Academy Award-winning actor to divest himself of several homes in an international portfolio of properties.
According to a report out of the UK Daily Mail, Cage is facing claims for millions of dollars in unpaid taxes and is said to have had a tax lien placed on him by U.S. authorities, resulting in his decision to sell his homes in California, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and yes, Middletown.
