NEWPORT – Members of the city council-elect voted on Thursday to name Henry F. "Harry" Winthrop as the city's next mayor. Second-term Councilwoman Naomi L. Neville will serve as vice-chair.
Meeting in the second floor conference room at City Hall, the incoming council voted unanimously to appoint Winthrop, who is currently serving out the term left vacant by the departure of former Mayor Stephen C. Waluk, to a full two-year term.
Neville, who earned the third highest vote count in the Nov. 6 election, replaces Second Ward Councilor Justin S. McLaughlin.
The pair will formally assume their posts as soon as the new council is sworn into office this coming January.
