NEWPORT – Crews on Friday were busy laying down the final coat of asphalt on Spring Street. It's the first major improvement to the road in decades.
According to Public Services Director Bill Riccio, work was expected to be complete by the end of Friday afternoon.
The $475,000 project, which city councilors first began exploring last May, is considered a temporary measure until a more comprehensive reconstruction can take place. It's similar to the process used to smooth out Lower Thames Street in advance of the America's Cup World Series.
According to Riccio, with proper maintenance, the new surface should hold up well for the next 7-10 years – long enough for the city to engineer a more long-term solution.
