NEWPORT – A Virginia woman who was visiting Newport on vacation this week suffered minor injuries after slipping into the waters just off the Cliff Walk on Wednesday.
Debora Wren, 61, of Arlington, Va. had been walking the Cliff Walk with her daughter, Melody Wren, also of Arlington, Va. when she slipped on the rocks at the base of 40 Steps.
According to fire personnel, crews received a 911 call reporting the incident at 10:04 a.m. Engine 5, which was the first engine on scene, arrived two minutes later, at 10:06 a.m.
Melody Wren said that he mother had fallen after descending from the iconic steps to the rocks below. Swept into the water, she was able to swim to a nearby rock where Newport fire crews were able to reach able to reach her.
In addition to Engine 5, apparatus responding included Rescue 2, Engine 2 and the Special Hazards Unit.
Wren was treated for minor injuries and transported to Newport Hospital. The Newport Police Department also responded to the scene.
