NEWPORT -- One week after a tragic accident claimed the life of cyclist Michael Strickland, some of his friends and fellow cycling enthusiasts are planning a special bike ride to celebrate his life.

The ride, which is also being promoted by Bike Newport, is slated to kick off at 4 p.m. from Washington Square. From there, participants will wind their way through Newport, past Easton's Beach and out to Indian Avenue before looping back to Washington Square where all are welcome to join in drinks and traditional Austrial pies at the Fastnet Pub.

The ride is 15 miles and will have a police escort.

According to organizers, "Everyone is welcome as we show our support to the Strickland family and bring more awareness to cycling safety."

Mike Strickland

Thank you to Ben and Mitch who organised this, and everybody who joined in. It was a fabulous farewell for Mike. It was the first time I had been on a bike on 20+ years, and I trained hard that afternoon, having a choc brownie, tim tam (choc biscuits for our Americna friends), and a coffee.
