i think that you want other people's money - the question is what money and where is it spent. Newport does a great job in attracting vistors - it just cant get them to stay overnight. Daytrippers will spend less on local businesses- eat breakfast at home, come visit and then leave at 7 pm. There are many younger, single folks that are here to get buzzed. Families find it expensive to stay in hotels and they cant rent houses by the week so they go someplace else for a beach vacation

tourism is how newport makes money - we just need less drunks and more families. I dont know the answer but how does a familiy of 4 know how to find reasonably priced accomodations in newport and know how to buy a pass for the beach? BTW First beach is a mess with all the algae and it smells. Second beach (or Gooseberry) is where to send people

Perhaps Concerned Taxpayer has a point, but the criticism always comes after the fact..

To determine the success of the America's Cup just a few days or a week later is short sighted. The media exposure of this event could prove priceless in the next few years....plus the organizers loved the venue.

Couldn't we do better?

You can see the polarization of our town evidenced in the conversation going on here.

I'm not sure why some cannot see the positive in many of the events that are scheduled for this (and other) summers. And there's a lot for locals too, free movies, repaved streets, lots of new venues to explore.

On the other hand, there's valid criticism in the planning and execution of the events already held. The ACWS moved buckets of money into the hands of the ACWS organization, courtesy of our state tax dollars rehabbing the Fort, while restricting the public's use of the Fort during the July 4th holidays and the week of the event. Not many local merchants benefitted from these visitors, if you ask them.

The Tall Ships brought a ton of visitors downtown, but many vendors also came from out of town, set up tents and trucks, and sold goods competing against our local businesses. And there's got to be a better way to service the hordes than porta potties sitting at Perotti Park, nasty looking recycling bins, and total gridlock traffic.

It seems that our local politicians have decided to chase the money at the expense of local residents. The City Manager has eliminated the Planner's position in favor of an economic development staffer, leaving the Planning Department ineffective. If our elected officials spent 1/10th the effort on working for us taxpayers, and not bowing before the altar of tourism and business, then this would be a better place for all of us, and we could perhaps appreciate all that Newport once was.

Perfect. Good!!!!! Go home!!!!! I'm sure it must be much better there! And don't come back!!!!! Buh-bye! Don't let the door hit you in the behind. Your loss.....

What?

Who said I lived here? I just came to visit and thought it was a complete mess. I feel bad for those who live here. Yes you have a beautiful landscape /seascape, but at what cost? NO thanks. I'll stick to just visiting. The traffic was silly crazy and it was overcrowded. And yes we parked our car and used the shuttles. Again, previous Tall Ships events were much more organized.

Hmmmm. Lets see.....americas cup, tall ships, professional tennis, jazz fest and folk fest with some of the best musicians in the world, local talent performing everyday at some venue, coaching weekend to come, easy access to beaches, the gorgeous ocean drive in gorgeous weather. What is there not to love? Move somewhere else and see how exciting your new hometime will be. Stop complaining like a 2 year old! Poor baby, the tall ships are not tall enough. Boo hoo!

"This is the BEST summer ever in Newport."
- You must be 5 years old. I've seen every Tall Ships here since 1976 and this was far from the best.

"We are very, very lucky"
- good for you, you've drank the kool-aid the City has fed you.

It will be interesting to see if the downtown merchants benefited greatly from this or not. The focus of this event was to bring the ships - and potential customers closer to the local businesses. I saw a lot of out of town hucksters in the mix.

Do you guys go out of your way just to be negative??? This is the BEST summer ever in Newport. Get your "expert" heads out of your tails, and perhaps you can enjoy a city that offers so much to so many. We are very, very lucky.

Private receptions

I think if you want the cachet part, you need to be a sponsor or someone special to go to the Private Receptions in the evening. Think $$$. Everyone else gets the tacky stuff. Just like America really.

Whoever put this train wreck of an event together must be trying to destroy what little cachet the "Newport" brand still has. Talk about trashy; there's everything from rows of fetid port-a-johns to overflowing garbage cans to toothless hucksters trying to sell you Walmart quality crap. All that's missing in order to have a true white trash experience are fried Twinkies.
