NEWPORT – Newport will host the sole North American Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in 2014-15.

Organizers made the announcement over social media in advance of a press conference at the Rhode Island Statehouse on Tuesday.

One of the world's most high-profile and elite sailing competitions, Newport had been vying with Baltimore for the rights to host the next edition of the race, and by all accounts, the decision went right down to the wire.

In fact, earlier this month, it appeared that Newport had once again been passed over.

One local hospitality executive even went so far as to pen a note to his counterpart in Maryland congratulating him on his city's successful bid.

However, complications derailed Baltimore's bid in what can only be described as the 12th hour.

Newport had previously lost out to the ports of Boston, and most recently to Miami in its other attempts to host the race.

More details are expected to emerge following a special press conference Tuesday afternoon.

good for business

If true this speaks well ofthe forsight demonstrated by the continued plans for improving the facilities at Fort Adams. The amount of media exposure that events such as the AC series and this bring the city certainly is a multiplier for the direct economic benefits realized during the event itself.
