NEWPORT -- Crews did in one night what had initially been anticipated to be a two-night project, laying down a smooth coat of asphalt over what was left of the historic cobblestone stretch of Lower Thames Street overnight Wednesday.
According to Department of Public Services Director Bill Riccio, the last truck pulled off the roadway right around 9 a.m. Thursday.
The project, which had initially been anticipated to take 3-4 weeks, took just seven days working days to complete, with funding through the state Department of Transportation.
