NEWPORT – Newport police are investigating a homicide that took place at a home on Gould Street late Wednesday night.
According to police, a man in his forties was stabbed to death inside an apartment after an argument apparently broke out with his assailant.
A suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident took place near the corner of Gould and Broadway.
According to police, at approximately 11:12 p.m., the Newport Police Department received a 911 call for an assault in progress at 53 1/2 Gould St. Officers arrived a short time later and found 44-year old Anthony E. Simmons of the same address, stabbed several times.
Simmons was transported to Newport Hospital and pronounced dead roughly 30 minutes later.
Meanwhile, at 11:18 p.m., officers located and arrested 42-year old Joseph Perryman, of no known address, on Broadway just north of Gould Street. During the investigation, police recovered a knife believed to be used in the incident, as well as clothing worn by Perryman during the assault.
Perryman is being charged with murder and was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning.
