Newport residents and food pantry volunteers Carol Dutton and Lynn Stewart.
The Citizens Bank Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the food program at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center in Newport.
The generous grant comes on the heels of the MLK Community Center's release of the 2012 meal numbers:
Between Jan. and May, 2012, the MLK Community Center has served 209 NEW families. The center has already served 49,898 meals in a five month span.
In 2011, they served 65,000 meals during the whole year. On average, the facility sees 429 individuals a month.
The center's food program aims to provide food for the increasing number of people in need in Newport County. The ‘Feed a Friend’ Food Pantry allows those receiving emergency food to select their own items, based on dietary or customized needs. Hundreds of Newport County residents are offered a hot meal each day and an opportunity to obtain food from the pantry. The food pantry is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
A breakfast program is also offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. For more information, visit www.mlkccenter.org.
