NEWPORT -- The Newport County Chamber of Commerce has voted to oppose any further tolls or toll increases on a pair of island bridges.
In a news release issued Tuesday, the Chamber said that its Board of Directors unanimously voted to oppose any further toll increase on the Newport Pell Bridge, or to introduce tolls on the new Sakonnet River Bridge. The organization, however, made no mention of a proposal to reinstate tolls on the Mount Hope Bridge.
According to the release, additional tolls would increase the costs of goods and services to the East Bay, make it harder for business to recruit top talent, and could have a negative impact on the competitive position of the island in preparation of the anticipated 2015 Base Realignment and Closure process by increasing the commuter costs for defense industry employees.
