In the wake of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn. last week, Newporter Kara DiCamillo, whose niece and nephew attend the school (both are safe), has suggested ways in which you can help make a difference in the Newtown community:

  1. “Let’s Give Sandy Hook School a Winter Wonderland" - Like our children, no two snowflakes are alike. All are invited to create snowflakes to decorate Sandy Hook School’s new home. Be creative! All colors and designs are welcome. Your children will enjoy creating art that can adorn the walls of SHS’s new elementary school.  Contact Kara at kadnpt@gmail.com and she can provide appropriate mailing addresses or, if you live in Newport, she can collect them from you and directly hand them off to her sister and niece and nephew in Newtown. Be sure to include “Sandy Hook Elementary” in the subject line when emailing her.
  1. Buy gifts for the school directly from The Toy Tree, a toy store in the center of Newtown. You can call the store with a credit card and if you wish to donate toys, books, games, etc. to the new school and classrooms they will gladly pick age appropriate items for you - or you can pick your own. Phone number: (203) 270-TOYS.
  1.  Please be cautious before contributing money and make sure the fund you are donating to is legitimate! You can donate money to the Sandy Hook Family Fund, who ask the world to join them not only in their grief but also to help take some of the burdens off of the families in their time of pain. Donations will pay for immediate needs, including funeral services, as well as ongoing living expenses such as food, mortgages payments, daycare, insurances and fuel until they are back on solid ground.

And for those in Newport, Kara will be collecting school supplies as well: educational games, toys, art supplies - just remember the age is K – grade 4.

Contact Kara at kadnpt@gmail.com and be sure to include “Sandy Hook Elementary” in the subject line when emailing.

Thanks

Thanks so much for telling us how we can help. My son, a friend and I made some snowflakes. We are mailing them to the PTA. So glad your niece and nephew are safe and hope they are coping as well as can be hoped.
