Aquidneck Island’s first full contact U19 rugby match against a competitive Hendricken side will take place this Sunday, April 15, 2012 rain or shine at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI. Warm-up starts at 2 p.m., with the match kicking off at 3 p.m. This event is FREE and open to the public for viewing.

Geared for players under 19, participants must be registered with USA Rugby as a player for the Newport County Youth Rugby Football Club prior to any rugby activities.

The Bishop Hendricken rugby team has 60 players every spring season. We will play against their freshman and sophomore squad as we are still developing and they are one of the dominant Division 1 High School Rugby Clubs in New England. They are also fortunate enough to have access to most of the top educated high school athletes in the state.

Well Chris Gray, Youth Development Officer for Island Rugby, says “we have plenty of educated athlete’s right here in Newport County and we aim to compete with Hendricken RFC in the very near future.”

He adds "We need your help to help our kids and our club. Rugby instills respect, teamwork, discipline, camaraderie and sportsmanship all while the participants are having fun and staying active. It is a physical game that releases negative energy in a positive manner, which most young adults quickly learn to love. Rugby is a true passion for millions world wide and it is now a gold medal sport in the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil."

Interested players should bring shorts, cleats a mouth piece and your USA Rugby registration receipt. More information can be found at www.usarugby.org.
