As November draws to a close, so too does Movember – the annual, month-long event involving the growing of moustaches to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other male cancer and associated charities.
For the last few years, team Newport Muzzy has raised thousands of dollars to help raise cancer awareness and this year is no different. According to their team page, Newport Muzzy has collected $3,795 so far, and is currently ranked #541 out of 14,581 teams in the US. Last year, the team raised over $10,000 during the month, more than doubling their 2010 figure.
To help sweeten the pot, the ‘Mo Sistas, a team of 14 Newport-based women raised over $150 on Monday afternoon. Running in a 5K they dubbed the “Castle Hill Classic,” the ‘Mo Sistas ran a span of Ocean Drive clad in cocktail dresses and homemade felt ‘staches, and crossed the finish line at Castle Hill. While taking in the sunset, Castle Hill promised to donate 50 percent of the ‘Mo Sistas bar tab (a couple hundred dollars) to help support Newport Muzzy.
On Friday, Nov. 30, Newport Muzzy will be wrapping up their month of fundraising with a final shave-off. Join the team at Fifth Element on Broadway starting at 8 p.m. A $20 donation at the door includes Newport Storm beer and wine from 8 – 10 p.m.
Raffle prizes donated by local businesses and ‘stache shave-offs (professional barber included). A band will be cranking tunes and ski attire is encouraged.
