DINING

NEWPORT, R.I. – Just in time to say goodbye to those winter blues, the Newport and Bristol County Visitors and Convention Bureau’s Spring Restaurant Week kicks off next week.

In the run-up to the gastronomic celebration, we’ll be featuring a series of videos, previews, and our personal picks for where to spend your hard-earned dollar. First up is Washington Square landmark Yesterday’s and The Place, where Chef Alex Daglis recently took us through one of his signature Restaurant Week dishes.

If you’re interested in having your restaurant profiled, e-mail Kirby@NewportThisWeek.net, or Advertising@Newport-Now.com. Also, be sure to look for our upcoming coverage in next Wednesday’s edition of Newport This Week.

Newport and Bristol Restaurant Week begins March 19 and runs until March 28. Visit www.GoNewportRestaurantWeek.com for more details and a full list of participating establishments.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Every once in a while, even the most devout islander will bring themselves to venture across the bridge and into the big city. Some do it every day. Others, only once in a blue moon.

If the buzz surrounding this weekend’s inaugural Winter Chili Festival at the Rhode Island Convention Center is to be believed, then this Saturday, Feb. 27 may just be such an occasion.

The Mudville Pub, with its one-of-a-kind location next to Cardine's Field, is getting ready to re-open.

NEWPORT, R.I. – Could it be? After a year-long absence, the venerable Mudville Pub is re-opening.

The popular West Marlborough Street haunt had been undergoing extensive renovations after sustaining significant water damage as a result of a broken pipe, what seems to have been many many moons ago.

The inside of the newly renovated Mudville looks much as it did before.

The inside of the newly renovated Mudville looks much as it did before.

But now, there’s reason for hope in Mudville. The majority of the construction to the space is complete, the tables and chairs have returned, and the bar has never looked so good. And while an official opening isn’t set until early next week (Monday or Tuesday was the word yesterday afternoon), you can still swing by and do a little Christmas shopping at the popular brew house; gift certificates are currently being sold – perfect for a Secret Santa gift or stocking stuffer.

Stay tuned for official word on an opening date and operating hours.

NEWPORT, R.I. – Indulging the demands of their customers at the Newport Wine Cellar, David and Maria Glade open the doors of their newest endeavor, Le Petit Gourmet, this Saturday.

Located side by side, the Newport Wine Cellar and Le Petit Gourmet go together, well like wine and cheese.

Located side by side, the Newport Wine Cellar and Le Petit Gourmet go together, well like wine and cheese.

Conveniently situated next door to their one year-old wine shop, the cozy international cheese and foodstuffs outpost was inspired by weekly Friday and Saturday evening tastings. “There are two things that have come out of that: people are trying wines that they never drank before, which is great, but they eat the cheese with the wine and then they want the cheese,” Maria explains. “People are feeling the absence of the market and they’re feeling the absence of Wickford Gourmet and we’re not trying to be necessarily either one of those businesses–we’re much smaller–but we’re trying to offer people gourmet food items at all price points so that they can put together an appetizer or a meal that will complement a bottle of wine.”
