Queen Anne Square Construction II

NEWPORT -- Crews arrived at Queen Anne Square Monday morning, sectioning off historic Frank Street and getting right to work.

The activity marks the first significant sign of progress at the park, which is being redesigned by famed architect Maya Lin.

A police detail stood watch at the site, where workers employed a drilling rig to begin digging into the soil in the northwest section of the park near Church Street.

The Doris Duke Memorial Foundation, which is funding the $4 million project, hopes to have work wrapped up in time for summer.

Who is paying for the police? I think the police presence would be more useful to us taxpayers if employed elsewhere.
