NEWPORT -- The Newport Interscholastic Girls Polo team is eyeing national glory.

The team, which is based out of Glen Farm, is heading to nationals after advancing past the US Polo Association’s Northeast Preliminary II polo tournament over the weekend in Portsmouth.

Team members say that it's the first time a Rhode Island team has advanced to the National Interscholastic Championship Tournament, which is being held at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va on March 1-4.

Competing on the team will be locals including Abby Mackenzie, Jenna Davis and Minnie Keating

The Newport Interscholastic polo program includes high school age players, and welcomes interested new students.

Coaching and instruction is provided by Dan Keating throughout the year at Newport Polo’s (private) instructional facility in Portsmouth.

“The growth and future of the sport of polo lies in early training for up and coming players.  We hope these kids continue to play polo while earning a degree at one of 40 top universities in the US that offer polo programs,” explained Dan Keating, founder and president of the Newport Polo Club.
