Celebrate the fall season with fun and flavor this Columbus Day weekend, enjoying the best of German food, music, and culture.   As always, the hoopla cannot begin without the tapping of Spaten’s keg, when the original, hearty Oktoberfest brew is awakened by the blows of our Master of Ceremonies, or “Burgermeister,” declaring “O’ zapft is!” Explore the expanded International Biergarten, featuring specialty beers brewed especially for this type of event, including Spaten, Leinenkugel’s, Samuel Adams, Hoegaarden, Leffe Brown, Beck’s and more.

Bavarian brews are only part of the fun – indulge in our Oktoberfest foodie favorites!  The world’s largest touring grill and tailgate party returns to serve up bundles of bratwursts at the Johnsonville Big Taste Grill.  The Hofbrauhaus restaurant from West Springfield, MA will also be on hand to provide authentic cuisine and bring a bit of Old Bavaria to New England.

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Redwood Library and Athenæum will be the site of a concert by Providence-based Anne’s Cordial on Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Library’s Harrison Room at 50 Bellevue Avenue, Newport.

Anne’s Cordial may be newcomers to the New England music scene, but with their unique instrumentation, tight vocal harmonies, and intriguing arrangements, they are already creating a stir. The Providence-based trio performs original songs and reinvents blues, bossa nova, and New Wave 80s hits. They regularly perform throughout New England at weddings, private events, coffeehouses and festivals.

Rick Massimo of The Providence Journal wrote “The Providence-based female trio Anne’s Cordial can make a 16th-century Spanish Christmas carol sound like the blues, then turn around and make Robert Johnson’s “Hellhound on My Trail” sound like a piece of medieval music. They’ve got piano, guitar and harp, but the voices are the thing, both individually and (especially) combined. Highly recommended.”

In the past year they have performed at numerous venues in Providence and Boston, including Perishable Theatre, the Middle East Corner Cafe, AS220, the Beehive, and Twin River Casino. They have shared the stage with Thea Hopkins, Allysen Callery, Kim Lamothe, Erik Lindren (of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic and Mission of Burma) and his Frankstein Consort, Genevieve, Emily Smith with Synergy, and Providence performance artist Spogga. They have been featured in live performances on WBSR and have performed at the annual Singing Out Against Hunger Festival and the Pawtucket Film Festival. Last year, they also coordinated a SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) Day event with MergingArts Productions featuring women musicians, poets, artisans and filmmakers throughout New England.

Each woman of Anne’s Cordial brings a unique background and focused energy to the performance. But it is their ease of collaboration that is so impressive.” wrote Mary DeBarry of Associated Content. Erin Reed Reed Ferenbaugh (harp, vocals), who specializes in Early Music also performs with the Boston-based Bulgarian chorus Divi Zheni; Natalie Markward (guitar, vocals), who arranges most of the material for the Anne’s Cordial, also performs with a jazz combo, Mis-En-Scene; and Eva Kendrick (keyboard, vocals), who writes original songs for Anne’s Cordial, is a composer who works with film-makers, poets, and chamber ensembles. Anne’s Cordial recently added a new regular drummer, Joe Auger.

In early 2009, Anne’s Cordial released an online album for download, the eponymous Anne’s Cordial EP. Upcoming gigs include White Electric, the Church St. Coffeehouse, SWAN Day 2009, and the Musica Fem concert at West Side Arts in support of Until the Violence Stops Festival.

This program is presented by the Redwood Library.  It is free and everyone is invited to attend.  It will be held in the newly restored historic 1750 Harrison Room of the Redwood.  For more information, please call (401) 847-0292.
