NEWPORT, R.I. – Today, Dec. 7, marks the 68th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. On that day, 2,335 military personnel and 68 civilians were killed – 1,177 on the USS Arizona alone.
And while flags at local government buildings are flying at half staff in remembrance of those who died, sadly, as the years go on, there are fewer and fewer veterans who can actually recall the events of the day. The above video was taken from a documentary on World War II from PearlHarborDay.org. At just over 8 minutes, it’s worth a look if only to remind ourselves of the sacrifice of those servicemen and women who died in the first volley of WWII. By the end of the war in 1945, more than 400,000 U.S. military personnel would lose their lives, and another 670,000 would come home wounded.
