NEWPORT, R.I. – A powerful and fast-moving storm that dumped several inches of rain accompanied by winds of up to 50 miles per hour brought tree limbs crashing, left some roads flooded, and drew scores of weather watchers out for a spectacular show along Aquidneck Island’s southern coastline.

Scattered power outages were also reported on the island, according to National Grid.

By 9 a.m., the sun was beginning to peak through the clouds and the wind was dying down. But the damage left by the overnight storm remained. At the normally tranquil Green Bridge, or Gooseneck Cove area, the high tide cut across the roadway, leaving rocks and rubble from the seawall behind. At Brenton Point, waves pounded the already-crumbling seawall, prompting the city to set up roadblocks along the stretch where Harrison Avenue intersects with Ocean Drive.

But that didn’t stop several individuals from seeking out a memorable photo or two. One couple was drenched by a wave that broke over the seawall near the Portuguese Discovery Monument.

If you have any photos from this morning’s storm, feel free to e-mail them to us at news@newport-now.com, and we’ll post them online!

Spectacular photos! Thanks from one who can no longer simply hop in the car and take a look like I used to. Hell hath no fury like a riled-up sea.
