NEWPORT, R.I. – Kudos go out to the Salve Regina University sailing team, who finished the 2009 fall season ranked 16th nationally, according to Sailing World.

The Seahawks capped a memorable campaign with a first-place finish at the Rhode Island State Championships two weeks ago and a big win at the Atlantic Coast Tournament this past weekend at Cornell University. At the Atlantic Coast Tournament, the team finished 17 points ahead of second-place Southern Florida.

“The team has never finished so strongly, and it shows promise for good finishes to come in the Hawaii Intersectional and demanding spring season internationals,” said Seahawk assistant coach Michael Komar.

NN spoke with Head Coach John Ingalls last month as the Seahawks were threatening to break into the top 10. He attributed the team’s success to a strong work ethic and fleet mentality.

“I attribute the team’s success to an awful lot of hard work; a lot of work over the past several years; a lot of work by the individual sailors, as well as a commitment by the University to support a sailing team that can compete with the best in the country,” he said, adding “As a ‘group’ we are pushing ourselves to improve. We won’t make it as individuals. Our best chance for success is with a strong team. Additionally,(thanks to the University) we raised money to purchase a new fleet of twenty 420’s, hosted regattas every weekend, hosted the national championship, and practiced, practiced, practiced. Just being out there day after day has made a huge difference.”

The Seahawks were led by the efforts of seniors Patrick Clancy (Scituate, R.I.), Torey Pellegrini (Kingston, Mass.), Lauren Cotta (Pawtucket, R.I.), and Lauren Grygiel (Westport, Mass.), and sophomores KaraFaye Buffa (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Peter Pellegrini (Kingston, Mass.).

Boston College was ranked first with 354 points, followed by Yale with 328 points and Brown with 326 points. The Seahawks finished ahead of Old Dominion, Boston University, Stanford, and Rhode Island. Sailing World’s rankings are determined by an open coaches poll; 18 coaches submitted votes for this poll (Nov. 18).

Salve Regina opens its spring season on January 16, 2010 with an intersectional regatta at the University of Hawaii. The Seahawks home opener will take place during the first week of March, and the winner will take home The Wood Trophy.
