NEWPORT, R.I. – Emergency repairs have begun to the Goat Island Causeway roughly eight months after an inspection report revealing serious deterioration to the span prompted state officials to cut its weight limit in half.

In February, the state posted a 10-ton limit for trucks and buses on the connector after engineers determined that the structure had degraded beyond the point of safely supporting its 19-ton limit.

“Our goal is to keep the bridge in service for the community, hotel, local residents and visitors,” Heidi Cote, spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, said of the work which began last week.

The $1.2 million Goat Island Causeway project is being paid for by state funding from the RIDOT.

“From now until the end of the year, we will be making preliminary repairs in preparation for the construction work scheduled to begin in Spring 2010.  The prime contractor, Carbon Wrap, has been awarded a $1.2 million contract to perform the necessary repairs to bring the Goat Island Causeway Bridge to it original load capacity.”
