NEWPORT, R.I. – Overlooked in the pre-season, Salve Regina University’s sailing team is on the cusp of breaking into the Top 10 of the U.S. College Sailing rankings as compiled by Sailing World Magazine.

In a poll out Oct. 7, Salve’s co-ed team earned a total of 159 points, catapulting the team nine spots from 20th from the first poll of the season to 11th in the latest tally. Prior to the season, Salve didn’t break the top 20.

Led by head coach John Ingalls, the last few years have seen the Seahawk sailors make significant progress in establishing the program on the national sailing scene, breaking into the top 20 for the first time in 2007.

Most recently, the team placed 7th at the Denmark Trophy, one spot ahead of Roger Williams University, who is also faring well in the fall season’s early goings. Currently, the team from across the Mount Hope is ranked 5th in the nation after being ranked 3rd in the Sept. 24 poll.
