NEWPORT, R.I. – Tennis legend Bud Collins is returning to Newport this month in a rare off-season appearance to give a lecture about Hall of Famer and Titanic survivor Dick Williams.

Entitled “The Miracle Man of Tennis…Dick Williams, Titanic Survivor,” Collins’ presentation slated for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, traces the life of Williams, who after jumping from the deck of the sinking ship and clinging to a half-submerged life raft for six hours, went on to attain the Number 1 ranking in the United States and place in the top 10 worldwide seven times between 1914 and 1925. He utlimately would be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1957.

The lecture will also touch on the life of Karl Behr, another Titanic survivor and a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame Class of 1969, who met Williams in the finals of the U.S. Nationals on the grounds of the Newport Casino in 1914.

The athletes were greeted by a capacity crowd of nearly 4,000, and Williams won the match 6-1, 6-2, 7-5. He ultimately won the tournament, his first of two U.S. singles titles.

Collins, who was himself inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1994, has become somewhat of a fixture at the annual Angela Moore Fashion Show and the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

The program will be held on Wednesday, October 21 at 6 p.m. Admission is complimentary for Hall of Fame members and $10 for non-members. Refreshments will be served. Reservations for the event should be emailed to programs@tennisfame.com or made via phone by calling 401-849-3990.
