NEWPORT, R.I. – Unseeded Rajeev Ram defeated number three seed Sam Querrey on Sunday in an all-American final, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3, to take the 2009 Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

It was his first ATP singles title, and was one of the most unlikely runs in tournament history.

The 25-year old Ram qualified for play as a lucky loser, only gaining entry after top-seeded Mardy Fish withdrew following his selection for Davis Cup play.

Ram, whose highest singles ranking heading into the tournament was 160, becomes the first non-qualifier to win at Newport since the tournament’s inception in 1976. He takes home $79,000 in prize money for his win. Querrey, 21, who was ranked 39th in the world heading into tournament play, receives $41,500 for his second-place finish.
