Third Beach in Middletown was closed to swimming on Thursday.

Update 7/12/09: Both Peabody’s and Third Beach have been reopened for swimming.

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – For the second time this year, the Rhode Island Department of Health has issued closures for Peabody’s Beach and Third Beach in Middletown.

According to health officials, both locations tested above the state’s limit for enteroccoci bacteria on Thursday, following yet another round of heavy rains earlier in the week. On a related note, Easton’s Beach in Newport remains open, despite persisent rains which city officials acknowledged earlier this week may have resulted in closures in previous years.

Beach closures are issued and rescinded on a rolling basis. Up-to-the-minute information can be found online at RIBeaches.org.
