If only luck were a Lady named Christine
NEWPORT, RI – Anyone near Newport Shipyard or crossing the Goat Island Causeway can’t help but croon their necks at the “impressive-even-by-Newport-standards” Lady Christine mega yacht in port. Despite its impressive stature, panoramic ceiling to floor windows and luxe interior, it is probably the helicopter, perched atop the upper deck and emblazoned with the ship’s logo, that is the vessel’s crowning glory. Here’s what we know about the 182.5-foot looker:
Built in 2001 by Dutch yacht builder Oceanco, Lady Christine can cruise up to 16 knots when continent-hopping. She is/was owned by 66 year-old Irvine Laidlaw, who in 2004 was ranked at Scotland’s fourth richest man. The Monaco-based founder of an internationally acclaimed conference organizing firm named the yacht for his second wife and the couple took two years to travel the world aboard the vessel. Unfortunately Lord Laidlaw was exposed by a newspaper in early 2008 for hosting sex parties with prostitutes and eventually sought help for a sex addiction…which may explain why last year Lady Christine was offered by Edmiston & Company for a coolEuro 45,000,000 (approx. $62,550,000). The silver lining? The price has recently been reduced to a recession-friendly Euro 39,900,000 (approx. $55,461,000).
